“When technology is the story and not the artist, then you have a problem.” - Billy Corgan

Shira Lazar talks with Billy Corgan about the current state of the music business and the impact that social media has on the overall music listening experience. To Billy, it is pivotal for artists to figure out a qualitative experience using technology that will draw the audience into a bigger experience that goes beyond music. He thinks that a visual component is necessary to create a more interactive and engaging experience in today’s world. He also discusses having to let go of his original concept of success, being an avid consumer of music, his love for what technology can do for music, how the quality of music should take precedence over social media statistics, how the new money is in marketing and not in selling music, how it’s important for an artist to create a world that people will be interested in visiting, how it’s important for fans to show their support for a band through social media, Spotify as a transitional model and how artists have to be more diverse and smarter.
